One of the most important skills you must learn to be successful in academia is how to manage your time.  In this career, you don't fill out a time card, but are judged on your output.  It is very easy to let a lot of time flit by without accomplishing anything.  Here are a few principles, hints, and advice on how to manage your time.

==Practical Advice and Tips==
* In public accounting, professionals must keep track of all their time to properly bill clients.  Try doing the same.  Keep track of what you do at work for an entire week in 6 minute increments.  It might amaze you how much time you spend surfing the net, talking with peers, eating lunch, etc.  
* One huge time sink for academics is the internet.  It is always available and there is always something to do.  You might consider blocking the sites where you waste a lot of time.  If you use Mozilla's Firefox internet browser, download the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3145 BlockSite] add-on and block Youtube, ESPN, and other sites where you habitually waste time.  
* Realize all the time you spend at working "playing" is time spent away from family.  Share your time report from the first bullet with you wife and ask her to regularly check up on you.
